New York, NY- Dr. Ellen Mellow is being recognized by
Continental Who’s Who as a Trusted Professional for her contributions to
internal medicine at the New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical
Center.
Dr. Mellow earned an undergraduate degree at Princeton
University in 1975 and a medical degree at Cornell University Medical College
in 1980. She completed her residency in internal medicine at the New York
Presbyterian Hospital Weill-Cornell Medical Center in 1983. She then finished a
fellowship in critical care medicine with the National Institutes of Health in
1986. She completed a second fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the
Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 1989.
Prior to her medical practice, Dr. Mellow was a full-time faculty member at the
Weill-Cornell Medical College. The doctor is board-certified in cardiovascular
disease (1989) and in internal medicine (1983) by the American Board of
Internal Medicine (ABIM). According to Dr. Mellow, the ABIM is a physician-led,
non-profit independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to
achieve higher standards for better care.
Dr. Mellow’s focus in her practice is to analyze risk and provide interventions
to reduce the chances of encountering undesirable cardiovascular outcomes, such
as sudden cardiac death, acute myocardial infarction (heart attack),
development of coronary artery disease (blockages in the arteries supplying
blood to the heart), stroke, and kidney damage. She encourages long-term
preventative care and addresses acute needs. Dr. Mellow’s office offers a range
of medical services, such as cardiovascular screening, cardiac risk factor
analysis, and intervention management of high blood pressure, management of
high cholesterol, weight management, nutrition, smoking cessation, annual
physical examinations, general cardiology consultations, evaluation of chest
pain and palpitations, sick visits, echocardiograms, treadmill stress tests,
and analysis of abnormal cardiac rhythms.
According to Dr. Mellow, cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the
disorders of the heart, as well as some parts of the circulatory system. The
field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects,
coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and
electrophysiology. Cardiologists are doctors who diagnose, assess, and treat
patients with diseases and defects of the heart and blood vessels (the
cardiovascular system).
The doctor remains adjunct faculty of the medical center and has admitting
privileges to New York-Presbyterian Hospital. She is considered an expert in
cardiology and is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) as well
as a Fellow of the American Heart Association. She is involved with non-profit
American Heart Association and has been recognized as a Top Doctor by Castle
Connolly Magazine. She has also been the
recipient of the Exceptional Women in Medicine Award and was featured among top
doctors in New York Magazine.
Dr. Mellow’s mentors are Dr. Wilson and Dr. Marc E. Josephson. She would like
to thank her husband Robert J. Kaner, the Department of Pulmonary and Critical
Care, and the Dept. of Genetic Medicine at Weill Cornell. She dedicates this
honor to dear children, David Samuel Kaner and Fara Bethany Kaner, who she
notes are her inspirations and to her parents, Anita and Bruce Mellow, in
loving memory.
