New Orleans, LA - Gerald McKinney, MD, is being recognized
by Continental Who's Who as an Distinguished Healthcare Professional in the
Medical field and in acknowledgment of his work at the University of
Mississippi Medical Center.
With over 21 years in the Medical profession, Gerald
McKinney, MD, is passionate about helping patients as a General Surgeon.
To begin his college education, Dr. McKinney attended Morehouse College,
earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1985. He next completed a
Medical degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1991. Dr. McKinney
completed a General Surgery residency in Atlanta, GA, at Morehouse School of
Medicine and subsequently began a faculty position. Dr. McKinney completed a Fellowship
in Minimally Invasive Surgery in Houston, TX. He has been recognized as a
Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and is additionally
board-certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS).
After completing his college education, Dr. McKinney joined the Medical Group
of Michigan City, IN, where he performed General, Trauma, and Advanced
Minimally Invasive Surgery. He then spent ten years as a faculty member and
Director of the Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Marshall
University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. The doctor joined Cabell
Huntington Hospital as the Director of Surgical Services from 2007-2013. Dr.
McKinney also joined the Jackson VA Medical Center in 2017 as a General Surgeon
and joined G.V. Sonny Montgomery VAMC in 2017 as the Chief of Surgery.
Today, Dr. McKinney teaches at The University Of Mississippi Medical Center,
where he has worked for the past eight years. He is a part-time Professor and
Director of Surgical Simulation. He is passionate about his career, saying,
"Being a healthcare provider is a privileged position. Individuals provide
a tremendous amount of trust in us and share the most intimate aspects of their
lives. As a result, we must treat them with the utmost respect and dignity.
Each patient should be treated as a whole: mind, body, spirit, and soul. These
can not be separated. This requires good communication from the healthcare
provider, a willingness to listen, and a desire to serve."
Awarded for his work, Dr. McKinney received recognition with profile features
in IssueWire and MarketWatch. He was the subject of a YouTube video created by
Cabell Huntington Hospital where he discussed the DaVinci Surgical System, a
method to operate on patients through their belly buttons. He was the only
surgeon at the hospital who had advanced training in this technique.
In his free time, Dr. McKinney loves drawing, music, and playing piano, guitar,
and bass. He is an avid sports enthusiast who loves running, football,
triathlons, and martial arts.
Dr. McKinney has had many influential mentors along his career path, including
Dr. Christopher Anderson, Chief of the University of Mississippi; Dr. Sue
Roberts, Former Chief of Staff at the VA; Dr. Claud Brunson, University of
Mississippi; and Dr. David Denning, Chairman of the Department of Surgery at
Washington University.
