Glen Craig Gustafson Ph.D. has built a distinguished career at the intersection of historical analysis and environmental consulting, applying decades of academic, military, and technical expertise to some of the most complex industrial site challenges. After devoting 36 years to teaching, he now focuses fully on his consulting practice, where he evaluates and manages the historical and environmental conditions of highly polluted properties.
Dr. Gustafson’s professional journey began with specialized training in aerial photography analysis during his service in the United States Air Force. Stationed in Abilene Texas with the Strategic Air Command Intelligence Division, he served during the Cuban Missile Crisis and later worked in Wiesbaden Germany. During this time, he contributed to the early use of military reconnaissance satellite imagery systems, including Corona and Gambit, gaining experience that would shape his future work in remote sensing and environmental evaluation.
In his consulting practice, Dr. Gustafson assists businesses in identifying historical contamination issues, navigating environmental regulations, and addressing the significant remediation costs associated with restoring impacted industrial sites. His work provides clients with critical insight into environmental risk, regulatory exposure, and long term property management strategies.
Dr. Gustafson earned a Bachelor of Science in geography and geology from the University of California at Santa Barbara, a Master of Science in geomorphology from ITC Delft, and a Ph.D. in quantitative geomorphology from the University of Munich in Germany. His doctoral dissertation was published, further underscoring his scholarly contributions to the field.
His professional affiliations include the American Society for Photogeometry and Remote Sensing and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society of America. In addition to his consulting work, Dr. Gustafson is deeply committed to community service. He volunteers with the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department as a member of the Citizens Emergency Response Team and supports disaster communications through the use of HAM radio. He also runs the food bank for Avalon Community Church on Catalina Island.
Outside of his professional and volunteer commitments, Dr. Gustafson has become an avid sailor and a self educated investor. He also enjoys drone flying and has produced approximately 40 short drone videos highlighting the landscape and coastline of Catalina Island California. Throughout his career, Dr. Gustafson has been guided by influential mentors, including John Estes Ph.D., Herman Verstappen Ph.D., and Hans Gunter Gierloff Emden Ph.D. Looking ahead, he remains dedicated to applying his expertise in service of environmental accountability, historical accuracy, and responsible land stewardship.
