KATHLEEN SLOBIN - PROFESSOR EMERITA

Dr. Kathleen Slobin is a prominent figure in the field of Health Medical Sociology, bringing over 15 years of dedicated experience in academia, research, and community involvement. Currently, she serves as a Professor Emerita at North Dakota State University, where she has made significant contributions to the academic community from 1991 to 2007. Throughout her career, Dr. Slobin has held various esteemed positions, including chair of the Department of Sociology-Anthropology, associate professor, director of women's studies, and assistant professor of sociology.

Before her impactful tenure at North Dakota State University, Dr. Slobin gained valuable experience at the University of California, where she worked as a staff research associate and research assistant from 1986 to 1990. Her career also includes serving as the associate director for the Continuing Education Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, an education coordinator for the National Energy Foundation, and a fine arts instructor at Indian Valley Community College.

Dr. Slobin holds a PhD in Medical Sociology from the University of California, earned in 1991, as well as a Master of Public Administration from California State University, Hayward, in 1984. She also holds a Master of Fine Arts in Fine Arts-Painting from the California College of Arts and Crafts, now known as the California College of the Arts, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Pomona College, obtained in 1964.

Her professional affiliations include the American Association of Sociology, reflecting her commitment to advancing the field. Dr. Slobin's career is characterized by her extensive contributions to academic research and civic engagement. She has authored several works, including "Field Notes Through Dark Times and Other Dislocations," and has contributed to various journals and book chapters. Additionally, she has served as a speaker at the California Pacific Medical Center and has edited the SWS Network News for the Society for Women Sociologists.

Dr. Slobin's accolades are numerous, including her induction into the Tapestry of Diverse Talents in 2006 and receiving both the Presidents Development Award from the American Sociological Association and the Presidents Professional Development Award from Women’s World in Kampala, Uganda, in 2002.

Outside her professional endeavors, Dr. Slobin enjoys painting, music, wildlife photography, theater, and writing poetry and journals. She expresses gratitude for the support of her family throughout her journey.

Looking ahead, Dr. Slobin aims for continued growth and success in both her academic and community endeavors, focusing on making a lasting impact in the field of Health Medical Sociology.
