R. PETER SPIES - ATTORNEY

Chicago, IL — R. Peter Spies is being recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Top Attorney for his contributions to the legal community and his professional excellence at Dineff Trademark Law Limited.

 

Having led an impressive legal career for 20 years, Attorney R. Peter Spies is an Intellectual Property Attorney at Dineff Trademark Law Limited in Chicago, IL, since 1998. Licensed to practice law in Germany and admitted to the bar in Michigan, Mr. Spies has earned distinction in the field of trademark prosecution and enforcement, including the areas of domain and internet issues and unfair competition. He is also admitted before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

 

At Dineff Trademark Law Limited, Mr. Spies’ practice includes counseling clients on developing brands and branding strategies, trademark clearance, filing, and prosecuting trademark applications in the US and abroad. He is one of three attorneys at the firm and offers a unique international background to best counsel his clients. Having grown up in Germany and lived in France, he takes pride in speaking several languages, which helps his position in acquiring, maintaining, and enforcing their intellectual property. In his current capacity, he implements and manages all aspects of domestic and international trademark prosecution, including developing and maintaining trademark portfolios for multinational corporations and midsize companies and assisting his client’s in implementing international and domestic filing strategies. He represents clients in enforcement matters, notably opposition and cancellation proceedings in the US, and engages in foreign litigation in collaboration with foreign counsel for his US clients. Additionally, he advises on internet-related issues and disputes including but not limited to UDRP and URS proceedings, social media issues. He utilizes his extensive background in licensing intellectual property and in negotiating agreements to help his clients achieve their goals.

 

To prepare for his distinguished legal career, Mr. Spies received his Law Degree from the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. He successfully completed the mandatory professional prerequisites before he was admitted to practice law in his home state Nord-Rhein-Westphalen. Shortly after, he relocated to the United States, where he obtained his Master of Laws in intellectual property with honors from the John Marshall Law School in Chicago.

 

Remaining abreast of the latest legal developments, Mr. Spies is an active member of the International Trademark Association (INTA), where he has served on various committees, including the Non-Traditional Marks Committee / Sub-Committee Europe & Central Asia, the Online Resource Committee, and the Unreal Campaign Committee. He is currently serving on the Building Bridges Committee. He is also an active member of the European Trademark Association, ECTA, where he has served on the Membership Committee and is currently serving as the Co-Chair of the Publication Committee. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the ECTA Bulletin.

 

In his spare time, Mr. Spies enjoys cooking, cycling, photography, and playing the guitar. He also devotes his time to his community regarding environmental and social justice concerns.

 

Mr. Spies dedicates this honorable recognition to his wife, Rina, whom he thanks for her love and support. He also dedicates his success to his father and mentor, Helmut Spies.

 

Mr. Spies is greatly inspired by his father, who started his own firm and formed it into a thriving accounting business with over 50 employees. His father’s demonstrated hard working spirit in both his personal and professional life has always intrigued Mr. Spies.
