RICHARD W. BOHANNON, PT, DPT, ED.D, FAPTA, FAHA, FGSA, FASNR, FAACPDM - PHYSICAL THERAPIST
A board-certified specialist in Neurologic Physical Therapy through 2019, Dr. Bohannon has garnered over 40 years of experience serving patients in acute care, rehabilitation, outpatient, and home-care settings. For the past 22 years, he has served as the principal PT at his private practice, Physical Therapy Consultants, located in Fuquay-Varina, NC. He provides contract care, focusing primarily on geriatric patients with limited mobility issues due to diverse conditions.
Dr. Bohannon is internationally recognized for his expertise in muscle performance following stroke, hand-held dynamometry, and mobility issues. He has served as a consultant to the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research and as a member of the American Physical Therapy Association's Neuromuscular Panel of Experts, which assisted in developing A Guide to Physical Therapist Practice, Part Two: Preferred Practice Patterns.
In addition to his clinic work, he serves as a consultant to industry (medical instrumentation, rehabilitation equipment, and pharmaceutical products) and the legal profession on muscle performance, mobility, and neurologic physical therapy.
A prolific researcher and scientific writer, Dr. Bohannon has authored over 400 publications in more than 50 different journals. Most notably, he was the Founding Editor of the Journal of Human Muscle Performance and was for over 10 years Editor in Chief of the Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy. He additionally serves on a variety of editorial boards. His research and teaching focus primarily on the measurement, implications, and treatment of impairments, most notably muscle weakness and activity limitations (mainly mobility) in older adult and neurologic populations.
In pursuit of his career, Dr. Bohannon obtained a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy and an Advanced Master of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. To further advance his education, he went on to earn an Ed.D. from North Carolina State University, a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Boston University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Southampton (UK) in May 2022.
As a testament to his extensive training, Dr. Bohannon holds multiple Fellowships, including with the American Heart Association; the American Physical Therapy Association, the Gerontologic Society of America; the Society for Sarcopenia, Cachexia, and Wasting Disorders; the American Society of Neurorehabilitation; and the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine.
In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Dr. Bohannon received the American Physical Therapy Association's Helen Hislop Award for Outstanding Contributions to Professional Literature in 1996. He was additionally awarded the Association's Marian Williams Award for Research in Physical Therapy in 2005, and in 2008 he was honored with the Association's Jules Rothstein Golden Pen Award for Scientific Writing.
His wife Lucie also serves in the physical therapy field. They have been married for 33 years and have one child.
